Cartouches were only worn by pharaohs, and it was believed that anyone who had their name inside one would be protected against evil spirits for eternity, both in life and the afterlife! The ancient Egyptian name for cartouche was ‘shen’ and means 'to encircle’.The word cartouche is actually a French word for gun cartridge. When Napoleon took his army on an expedition to Egypt, the soldiers noticed that the shape of the name plate looks like a cartouche and the name stuck ever since!
