Falafel
Egyptian Falafel (Ta’ameya) – The Original Falafel
Falafel has become one of the world’s most beloved Middle Eastern foods — crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and packed with flavour.
These famous bite-sized fritters are naturally vegan, often gluten-free, and enjoyed across the globe as street food, sandwiches, wraps, and traditional meals.
But many people don’t realize that falafel is believed to have originated in Egypt.
In Egypt, falafel is commonly known as:
“Ta’ameya” (طعمية)
A word that roughly translates to:
“tasty little bites”
The Egyptian Origins of Falafel
According to popular historical theories, falafel traces its roots back to Egypt’s Coptic Christian community.
The word itself is believed to come from the ancient Coptic phrase:
“Pha La Phel” (Φα Λα Φελ)
meaning:
“of many beans”
Coptic Christians are thought to have created falafel as a meat-free alternative during Lent and fasting periods, offering a satisfying and protein-rich substitute similar in appearance to meatballs.
Over time, falafel spread throughout the Middle East and became one of the region’s most iconic dishes.
Today, variations of falafel can be found across:
- Lebanon
- Syria
- Jordan
- Palestine
- Yemen
- And many other countries
However, Egyptian falafel remains uniquely distinct.
What Makes Egyptian Falafel Different?
Unlike many Middle Eastern versions made primarily with chickpeas, authentic Egyptian Ta’ameya is traditionally made using:
- Dried fava beans (broad beans)
Fava beans are abundant in Egypt, especially throughout the fertile Nile Delta region.
This key difference gives Egyptian falafel its:
- Softer texture
- Fluffier interior
- Richer flavour
- Vibrant green colour
Egyptian falafel is also loaded with fresh herbs and greens such as:
- Parsley
- Cilantro
- Leeks
- Fresh herbs and spices
The result is a fresher, greener, and more herbaceous flavour profile than many other falafel varieties around the world.
For many food lovers, Egyptian Ta’ameya is considered the best falafel in the world.
Crispy, Fluffy & Full of Flavour
Perfect Egyptian falafel should be:
- Crispy outside
- Soft and fluffy inside
- Rich in herbs and spices
- Fresh and flavourful
It is commonly served:
- In pita bread
- With tahini sauce
- Alongside salads and pickles
- As part of a traditional Egyptian breakfast
Whether eaten as street food or homemade comfort food, Ta’ameya remains one of Egypt’s most iconic and beloved dishes.
