Through history, there was always a capital for Egypt but the modern Cairo we know today as Egypt’s Capital city was actually founded more than 1000 years ago by the Fatimid Dynasty. Their establishment in the newly built palace city of Cairo had dramatic consequences for the evolution of Islamic Egypt and made Cairo the heart of the region’s political and cultural life.
Muslim General Jawhar Al-Seqelli, gave the city the name Al-Qāhirah as it soon became known to the West as Cairo. He built the town into a walled city, strong enough to survive the attack of any opposing armies. The city became the headquarters of the government and the core of all sectors of financial and political control.
