MASR
Over the centuries, Egypt has had many names in many different languages. From Hieroglyphs, Greek, Arabic, to Egyptian modern language, a number of names were used for Egypt.
The classical Arabic and modern official name of Egypt is 'Misr'!
Misr is an Arabic word that translates to ‘a country or fortress’. But it's well known to any Arabic speaker as the Arabic name for Egypt. There are many theories for the origin of ‘Misr’ as the Arabic name for Egypt. One of them originates from the Islamic Quran.
In contrast, the name 'Mizraim' is the original name given for Egypt in the Hebrew Old Testament, many Bibles will have a footnote next to the name 'Mizraim' explaining that it means Egypt.
Egyptians refer to Egypt as ‘Masr’ (the local pronunciation of Misr in Egyptian Arabic).
Did you know that ‘Aiguptos’ or Egypt is the name that the Ancient Greeks gave to the country?
Another popular ancient name for Egypt was ‘Kemet’.
Ancient Egyptian language did not include vowels, so transliteration are often written with added letters (often the letter "e") to aid pronunciation. Scholars generally believe that ‘Kemet’ means the ‘black land’, derived from the colour of the rich and fertile black soil that is left over when the Nile flood recedes as a result of the annually occurring Nile inundation.
